Some shutter at the color, but others are raving about the latest trend in the beauty industry. Let’s get into the lowdown on whether activated charcoal beauty products are worth the hype. Have you tried any?
In case you’ve been living under a rock, activated charcoal is a big thing in the beauty and wellness industry as of late. It’s not anything new right this second, but I finally gave in and bought some products once I realized it wasn’t a “fad.” I didn’t realize how many questions you all had about activated charcoal products until I posted this beauty post. I mentioned that I was looking forward to trying two of their charcoal products, and instantly you had questions. (Which I completely understand!) Kind of an interesting fact, the highest purchased item I have ever shared with y’all was this Beautycounter Purifying Charcoal Mask. So, it made me think. Maybe I should explain this whole charcoal thing!
So, what is activated charcoal?
Long story short, activated charcoal has recently become a well known ingredient in a lot of face masks, anti-acne cleansers, and even dental care products. Before the beauty industry, charcoal was originally used in emergency rooms to treat alcohol poisoning and drug overdoses. It works by attaching to toxins in the stomach, preventing them from entering the bloodstream. The effectiveness is similar in skincare, it acts as a magnet that binds to dirt, bacteria, and oil. If you can get past the color, give one of these products below a try! (And no, they won’t all break the bank. Drugstore brands are also using activated charcoal in a lot of products.)
Soap & Cleansers
This is my favorite usage of activated charcoal. For these products, looks for ones that include common acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid, bentonite clay, or tea tree oil.
Bodywash & Scrubs
If you use it on your face, why not on your body? There are some great washes and scrubs out right now. I’m loving the Garnier one right now!
Who else loves mask? Grab a glass of wine, turn on some tunes and hop in the bath. So freaking relaxing! I just purchased this one, as it’s a steal for under $4!
Wipes & Blotting Paper
Before I go to bed I make sure to remove all of my makeup from the day. This is a super important step in a skincare regime. Makeup removing wipes are a great option, but go for a wash-off treatment for those days you apply a lot of makeup.
After a lot of trial and error, I am loving the activated charcoal beauty trend. Heck, they even make black shampoo! So cool! If you’re a little hesitant to jump right into the charcoal craze, try a drugstore brand first. Once you’re a little more comfortable I highly recommend the two Beautycounter products above! Have you tried the charcoal trend? Any products you are loving that I didn’t mention?
